We had a fun trip to the animal ER last night. It began when our yellow lab started looking more like a Shar Pei.
"Greg! Look at Roscoe! What's happening to his eyes?? He has red splotches all over his belly too!"
Poor dude was puffing up fast. We googled allergic reactions in dogs and Benadryl and basically gave in to the new pet owners in us and headed for the animal hospital.
Though we turned around twice, debating it. What finally did us in was how lethargic he started acting and some weird breathing that was going on.
Of course he perked right up once we arrived. There was a cat in triage.
We stopped really worrying about him at this point but stayed around since we were already there. It took over 2 hours to get a Benadryl shot and discharge sheet but the animal ER is kind of a really exciting place to be on a Sunday night so the time flew by.
There was an older couple that walked in just a few minutes after us bringing in their dog with the same symptoms as Roscoe. Except their dog's plight seemed to stem more from embedded quills leftover from an encounter with a porcupine several weeks ago. We started exchanging stories and our dogs sounded exactly alike. Right down to an insane infatuation with cats, squirrels, bunnies, deer, and everything else that moves.
My favorite part was when they were leaving.
Him: "Do you have the keys?"
Her: "Why would I have the keys?"
Him: "Because I gave them to you."
Her: "Well you shouldn't have done that..." Fumbles around in pocket. "Ugh, I have the keys."
Greg and I just looked at each other and laughed. It was like watching ourselves. We loved them.
Happily, Roscoe is alright now, albeit very sleepy from the Benadryl. He woke up long enough to rip apart his Sid the Sloth doll and leave stuffing trails all over my house so I'd say we're getting back to normal.
We still have no idea what he reacted to, but at least we know what to do if it happens again. Also, we took notes on a recipe for removing stunk stench that we overhead a vet tech passing along to someone. Hopefully that will never come in handy...but at least we're ready!
A few parting photos:
