Yoo 441 - NZ...Wanaka/Queenstown

^^ blooper...

I skipped over New Years Eve in Wanaka and our attempt to see Queenstown so let's back-track just a bit.

After hiking glaciers and eating fish 'n chips, we drove thru more beautiful country to Wanaka. All the accommodations were booked (new years eve...) so we parked on the lakefront and settled in for a party.

But not before we'd stopped at a New World grocery store and loaded up on L&P and candy bars (on sale for $0.89!).

We were going to join the concerts and party...but then we just sat in the car and people-watched...and then we fell asleep. Probably around nine o'clock. Party animals? Check. I did jerk awake when the fireworks started and managed to keep my eyes open long enough to watch.

First in the world to welcome in the New Year!

Then we spent the night in the car. Everyone else was doing it...

^^ new year's rainbow

In the morning it was on to Queenstown. Another gorgeous drive. And then...disappointment. Rain, flooding, heavy cloud cover. Nothing was in our favor.

Most every tour had been cancelled and there aren't many indoor options. We zipped up our rain jackets and tried to make the most of it.

^^ could have been a really nice view...

^^ right...

^^ ignorant kyoo, just playing with her own camera

The Skyline Luge was so. worth. it. At the very top of the mountain, it offers quite the adrenaline rush for 8 bucks. Also entertaining? Watching Greg try to fit his long legs in the sled...

^^ misspelled, but it's the first time i've seen my name in a souvenir shop!

^^ big boots to fill...

Queenstown didn't quite go as planned, but every vacation needs a bummer day, right? Gave us some time to relax before Kepler. And it was the last of the really bad weather days on our trip so I can't complain.

Besides, Queenstown is really touristy. Who wants to get pushed around in a throng of visitors? Pshaw. There are way cooler places to spend a day...

(i'm still trying to make myself feel better...)

The technicals: we drove 68 kilometers from Wanaka to Queenstown on the scenic Cardrona Valley Road. After realizing that Queenstown was a bust due to weather, we drove south on the 6 and then west on the 94 for 168 kilometers to Te Anau. There we camped at a surprisingly fancy holiday park and prepared to start Kepler Track.

Have a great day :-)
