Yoo 527 - More Balloons

Mass ascension got off to a slow start the first day and after driving all night, we thought we were in for disappointment. We expected hundreds of balloons and there were just a few! And we were freezing.

After flagging down someone official looking, aka they were wearing a ref shirt and otherwise dressed like a zebra, we learned that most of the pilots were waiting for a green flag from the weather crew. That came just a short time later and then...BALLOONS.

The fun part of Balloon Fiesta is that there is nothing between you and the pilots and chase crews and balloons. You can touch the balloons. You can talk to the pilots. You can feel the warmth of the burners. It's cool to stand there and watch a balloon go from being in a stuff sack to billowing around on the ground to ascending into the sky. The surreal part is that it's happening hundreds of times almost simultaneously on all sides of your person.

Taking it all in is a bit impossible.

We logged over 25,000 steps that day, and most of them came from running all over those fields trying to see every balloon and feel the rush of excitement and cheers as each one slowly drifted up into the sky.

It turned out that the only real disappointment of the morning was that none of the balloons played a theme song. To miss an opportunity to blast The Imperial March while Lord Vader rises above the crowd or Spider Pig while its balloon form ascends into the blue is a bit of a shame.

Have a great day :-)
