I left work early.
Drove through the hill country with the Alishafriend and her dog Kely.
(and tried really hard to get Kely to look at the camera).
(and finally...!)
Sang along with Colbie Caillat's album "All of You".
Went on a short hike under a brilliant night's sky full of stars.
(the stars looked like this). (sort of).
Set up camp and ate our fav Velveeta shells and cheddar. (though we def should have brought two boxes...we were ravenous again by 1am).
Tucked into our sleeping bags and started watching a movie on the iPad. (we're not minimalist backpackers...).
And were thoroughly enjoying the evening. The weather was warm. We had the primitive campsite to ourselves. Everything was perfect.
And then the boy scouts moved in.
A couple troops full of hyper young boys and commanding leaders approached with clangs and shuffles and shouts of acceptance. This was their "spot" for the night.
Awesome for us!
We listened to them set up camp and settle for the next two hours. And just when we thought peace was restored to the neighborhood, they started snoring. Oh the snoring! Ear plugs for the next camping trip maybe?
The whole situation actually wasn't that bad. We found it quite humorous, mostly. Just our luck! My favorite part was waking up in the morning to "Can anybody help me?!" shouted just feet away from our tent.
No responses.
"Guys! I need help can someone please help me!!"
Still no responses. The kid sounded troubled and desperate.
After listening to several more pleas and realizing that no one was paying attention to the poor child, I crawled out of my sleeping bag, slipped my boots on, emerged from the tent, and surveyed the scene. There definitely wasn't a life and death situation. I walked over to the boy standing next to a fishing pole and asked him what the matter was.
He needed help tying his fishing lure to his line.
Cool. Glad I got up for that. I tried for a minute to tie it myself but I was as lost as he was. He told me to get George.
"Who's George?"
"That boy over there in the red hat."
"Hmmm, ok, I'm not part of your troop or anything so how bout I watch your 'stuff' and you can go get George."
He scurried off, I watched his stuff, and all was well. Though I'm still not sure why I had to watch his stuff. Or why everyone was ignoring him. Did I mention "George" was just 20 feet away?
Poor kid.
But it was an entertaining day with the boy scouts running around. We did some hiking. Napped in the tent. Watched more movies. And ate. Basically everything I wanted from a quick weekend camping trip. Escape from civilization and the cell phone and computer. (iPad doesn't count!).
Some more favorite pics from the trip:
(I usually think small dogs are annoying but Kely is the exception). (she's a big dog in a little body). (and so entertaining).
(cookies for breakfast?) (yes.)
(Kely's quite the hiker). (we went about 10 miles total and she trotted along for the whole thing).
(sometimes we hike with our hands in the "prayer" position). (to keep our fingers from swelling). (it's weird).
(Lost Maples State Natural Area. beautiful park. highly recommend it.)
(sometimes, when Kely is crossing the rock bridges over streams, she gets confused. and isn't sure where to jump. so she'll just jump off the rock, over the stream, and wait for Alisha to catch her on the leash mid-air and swing her back to the next rock. it's pretty entertaining.)
(woke up from a nap to this ^ peering at me).
(pond we camped next to).
(we made some new friends while trying to do dishes Friday night...).
Fun times! We went camping at Lost Maples the same time last year so it's pretty much a January tradition now.
In other adventures, I finally took down my Christmas decorations (you can judge, that's sad), hated Costco for closing too early on Saturdays (6pm...really?), lit a lighter for the first time (also sad, but it hurts my thumb!), and tried a Thingamajig candy bar (not as good as a Whatchamacallit).
Have a great day :-)
