^^ the overly dramatic seal
^^ the belly-scratching seal
^^ the seal stare-down
^^ kyoo and the seal (!!)
Ok, so they're all the same seal...but isn't he adorable? I wanted to give him a hug but my better instincts (and a sign) told me to keep my distance.
Kaikoura is known for it's whale-watching. So much so that they have hundreds of people willing to pay $145 per person to cram on a boat with hordes of other whale-seekers for a long, often violent cruise out to a deep-sea canyon. Here they will stand for the better part of an hour, gawking at a big lump in the water. And maybe, if they're lucky, a tail or water spout.
We didn't pony up for that experience.
Instead we stalked seals along the rocks at low tide and then hiked around the peninsula.
Free and far more scenic.
^^ the clouds were totally cramping our view!
^^ stank
^^ doesn't that look soooooo romantic?
^^ but of course there's a jumping picture...
^^ i'm not sure if greg loves me more...or l&p...
^^ our first (of maaaaany) nights camping!
As fun as hiking and testing just how close I could safely get to the seals was, grocery shopping might have been the highlight of our first full day. So many new things to try! We wandered and re-wandered the aisles of the Christchurch PAK'nSAVE for the better part of an hour, obviously leaving with plenty to sustain us for the next week.
(with our kind of budget, you don't get the luxury of eating out for every meal...especially at nz prices!)
Peanut butter, jelly, and nutella - holla!
The technicals: we started the day in Christchurch, drove north on the 1 to Kaikoura and then on to spend the night in Blenheim, covering about 310 kilometers.
Have a great day :-)

Love the seal! He's so cute... and definitely melodramatically sprawled across the rock.
Your sitting-on-a-bench pic made me gag a little. And I'm in class right now. Just sayin.
And... do I spy a Turkish delight tucked in your grocery stash? Delicious. :)
So excited to read about more of your adventures!
That picture made you gag in med school? Mission accomplished :-)
And YES. I discovered Turkish Delight in Canada (brief crossing at Niagara Falls) and have been in love ever since. They are no where to be found in the states but NZ has them! (I came back with over a dozen...)
